Wounded Knee
|
December 29,1890, Silence takes over the streets after learning of the killing of defenseless unarmed American Indians. Each household quiet, for no one knows how to respond to this disheartening occurrence. This was the outcome of a panicked army after an accidental shot was fired while a group of American Indians were surrendering there land after years of fighting back. You see they were being forced to move off of the land and to a land in the west. Many of them already had surrendered, but there were those proud few who knew that the land was theirs. A movement called the ghost dance was created by Wavoka a member of the Paiute Indian tribe. This movement scared the army and caused them to go and arrest some major people from these tribes. After a long time of fighting back they surrendered. 350 women and children were taken to a camp at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. It was here that they ere surrendering all arms to the army. A crucial moment here was the accidental firing of Black Coyote's gun. The army panicked. In what would seem like just a moment the majority of the American Indians that were there lay dead or dieing. It was this accidental shot that triggered this attack on the American Indians. As many as 300 American Indians died at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in what is beginning to be called their "Last Stand".
